How to Photograph a Solar Eclipse: Techniques and Safety Tips

Have you ever witnessed a solar eclipse? It's truly a mesmerizing sight to see the moon perfectly align with the sun, resulting in a beautiful celestial display. I saw it for the first time in August of 2017. It was beautiful, a moment I'll remember forever.
With another opportunity to witness a solar eclipse coming in 2024, I want to be prepared to capture this one on camera. Today I'm here to share some techniques and safety tips for photographing a solar eclipse.

First things first, safety always comes first when it comes to photographing the sun. Never look directly at the sun without proper solar filters, as this can cause permanent eye damage. Make sure to invest in high-quality solar filters that fit securely over your camera lens or telescope.

When it comes to camera settings, it's best to shoot in manual mode to have full control over your exposure. Use a low ISO to reduce noise in your images and a fast shutter speed to prevent overexposure. Consider using a tripod to keep your camera steady during the long exposures required for solar eclipse photography.

Another useful tool to have when photographing a solar eclipse is a telephoto lens. This will allow you to zoom in on the sun and capture the details of the solar corona. Additionally, consider using a solar telescope or a specialized solar camera for even more detailed images.
