The simplest, easiest to use Bahtinov Focus Tool for camera lenses. 

Unlike screw-on Bahtinov masks that require a specific filter-thread size, this mask clips onto the outside of your lens, telescope tube, or dew shield. Simply measure the exterior diameter where the mask will attach and choose the appropriate size.


Clips to the Exterior of the Lens

The tool clips to the exterior of the lens, allowing for easy mounting and dismounting, even in the dark. Removing the mask won't bump your focus ring.

Why choose a clip-on mask?

No filter thread required. This Bahtinov mask clips around the outside of your lens, telescope tube, or dew shield. You don't need to match your lens's filter-thread size or permanently attach anything to a filter. Measure the exterior diameter and choose the appropriate size.

Three sizes are available for exterior diameters from 60 to 160 mm. Measure the outside diameter of your lens barrel, telescope tube, or dew shield before ordering.

Bahtinovs are easy to use. Before attaching the device, aim your lens or telescope at a bright star and manually adjust the focus of your lens or telescope until it looks close to focus. Then, gently attach the bahtinov. The mask will diffract the light into three spikes. Adjust focus until the middle spike is centered, then carefully remove the mask to begin viewing. Works best on focal lengths above ~100mm and on moderately bright stars in live view.  On very wide, fast lenses (24mm and under) in low-light conditions, the diffraction spikes can be difficult to see on faint targets; a longer lens or a brighter star/planet as a focus target is recommended for those setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size Bahtinov mask do I need?

Measure the exterior diameter where the mask will actually clip onto your equipment. For camera lenses, measure the outside of the lens barrel. For telescopes, measure the outside diameter of the tube or dew shield at the point where you will attach the mask. Do not measure the front glass or optical diameter. The mask must clip securely onto a section between 60 and 160mm in outside diameter.


Does it work with telescopes as well as camera lenses?

Yes. It clips to the exterior of the lens, dew shield, or telescope tube the same way, and works with refractors and guide scopes in addition to DSLR and mirrorless lenses.

Will it scratch or damage my lens?

No. The frame has soft protective tips at the contact points, and it clips to the outside of the lens rather than the thread, so removing it won't bump your focus ring or leave marks.

Does it work on any star, or does the target matter?

It works best on moderately bright stars and longer focal lengths. On very wide, fast lenses in especially dark or low-light conditions, a brighter star or planet as your focus target will give clearer diffraction spikes.

How do I use it once it's attached?

Point at a bright star and get roughly focused first, then attach the mask. It splits the star's
light into three diffraction spikes. Adjust focus until the center spike lines up evenly between the other two, then remove the mask to shoot.

Suprise on clarity

I've used a similar star focus mechanism before, but for lenses that had lens filters 85mm and under. I used this on my 95mm lens filter. After putting it on, I started to focus onto a bright and was expecting the cross lines to appear and they didn't until I was just about in focus. That's why it was a suprise. It crept up me but when the cross appeared, it was dead on accurate! Wonderful results. Well worth the price!

Super bright star otherwise useless

Arrived no problem, only realised it from USA when during shipping tracking saying leaving USA city etc (so I thought maybe hassle returning etc / not worth cost) etc.
1st time I tried it moonless clear sky,pitch dark night, zero light pollution, north Scotland, sky full of stars but no matter what star I tried it was useless, too faint on live view. Sony a7iii, samyang 24 f2.8, Sony 70-200 f4 even my sigma 14mm f1.4 DN. No X showing on live view up so I consigned this to my junk drawer.
Then I got the 60 day review email & tried it again on my old Sony a7 full spectrum modded, samyang 135mm f2, 1 day after full harvest moon with Jupiter (close by) as subject. Live view zoomed in & Jupiter showed up fine with usable X in live view.

So it works at 135mm on Jupiter but not my wide lenses. For wide lenses I use my screw on star eight filter (which works perfectly on southern hemisphere : capetown) on my 24mm f2.8.

I’ll keep trying this mask, some nights it’l work & others not so. But Mega bright objects req.

excellent bahtinov mask, the fine patten works on my 50mm, 135mm lenses and my refractor scope perfectly with a dslr or dedicated astro camera, it even worked on my 30mm guide scope. Very satisfied with this mask and would highly recommend.
